Fire fighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service.
At the 2023 IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial, 63% of the names added to the wall were members who had died from occupational cancer.
In partnership with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN), the IAFF has designated January as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month to provide fire fighters the necessary tools and guidance to develop life-saving protocols for cancer prevention and to support those with a cancer diagnosis within their departments.
𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐕𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐬 **𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐝 Units are proposed for Elimination in theFY26 Advertised Budget.**Earlier this evening, our members were dispatched to a multi-vehicle collision with reports of multiple patients trapped. Upon arrival, crews encountered several injured patients — including two still trapped in one of the vehicles after a T-bone collision. One of the trapped patients was able to self-extricate, while the second required a full vehicle extrication by 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝 𝟒𝟏𝟗 (𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧). Upon arrival, Rescue squad 419 quickly went to work to remove the patient so they could be transferred to EMS units on scene and transported to the hospital for further evaluation.Had this call occurred after July 1, 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝 𝟒𝟏𝟗 (𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧) would no longer exist due to the proposed FY26 Advertised Budget cuts. This would have resulted in longer wait times for critical rescue services, leaving the trapped patient in the vehicle for a significantly longer period of time, a delay that could mean the difference between life and death. In addition, 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟰𝟰𝟭 (𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲), which normally serves this area, was already on another call. This meant Ambulance 427 (West Springfield) had to respond, further increasing patient wait times on the side of the road after the collison. The proposed budget calls for the elimination of FOUR ambulances, meaning delays like this will become a regular occurrence across Clifton, Gunston, Crosspointe (Fairfax Station), North Point (Herndon), and beyond. These cuts will create a domino effect, impacting response times across the entire County. This is not a hypothetical scenario, it’s a real-life example of why FULLY FUNDING Fire and Rescue services is critical for the safety of Fairfax County residents and visitors. Every second counts in emergencies, and these proposed cuts will directly result in longer wait times, fewer available units, and delayed patient care.Responding Units:Engines: Engine 441 (Crosspointe)Ladder Trucks: Truck 441 (Crosspointe)Rescue Squads: 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝 𝟒𝟏𝟗 (𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧)EMS Units: Medic 435 (Pohick), Ambulance 427 (West Springfield), Medic 419 (Lorton), EMS Supervisor 405Incident Command: Battalion Chief 405, Safety Officer 402This is unacceptable. Public safety must remain a TOP PRIORITY. We need your voice to stop these dangerous cuts.Take action now: Contact the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and demand they restore funding for 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟰𝟭𝟲 (𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗼𝗻), 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟰𝟮𝟬 (𝗚𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻), 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟰𝟰𝟭 (𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲), 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝟰𝟯𝟵 and keep critical rescue services like 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐝 𝟒𝟏𝟗 (𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐧) in service. Lives depend on it.Share this post with your friends, family, and neighbors, help spread the word. Every second counts in an emergency, and these proposed cuts put everyone at risk.#Local2068 #FCFRD #fairfaxcounty #cliftonva #gunstonva #fairfaxstationva #herndonva #IAFF ... See MoreSee Less

First-arriving crews encountered significant fire conditions rapidly spreading throughout the home. Our members quickly initiated an aggressive attack to knock down the fire while ensuring all occupants had evacuated safely. Due to conditions, a second alarm was requested. Crews worked diligently to extinguish the fire, address hot spots, and conduct salvage and overhaul operations.𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟒𝟒𝟏 (𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞) and additional EMS units transported five civilians to local hospitals. Two firefighters were also transported with minor injuries. Fire investigators remain on scene working to determine the cause. This incident underscores the grave risk of eliminating EMS units in our community. When emergencies happen, the ability to provide immediate medical care and transport multiple patients can mean the difference between life and death.Due to other calls, maintenance, and extenuating circumstances, many Fairfax County EMS units in this area were unavailable, forcing patients to wait for EMS units from Prince William County. If the proposed FY26 budgett cuts move forward, these dangerous delays will become routine, putting Fairfax County residents and visitors at even greater risk.Responding Units:Engines: Engine 441 (Crosspointe), Engine 435 (Pohick), Engine 427 (West Springfield), Engine 440 (Fairfax Center), Engine 414 (Burke), Engine 420 (Gunston)Ladder Trucks: Truck 441 (Crosspointe), Truck 422 (Springfield)Rescue Squads: 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝟒𝟐𝟏 (𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐎𝐚𝐤𝐬),Rescue 414 (Burke)EMS Units: 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟒𝟒𝟏 (𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞)Medic 435 (Pohick), EMS Supervisor 406, EMS Supervisor 404, EMS Supervisor 401Incident Command: Battalion Chief 405, Battalion Chief 407, Battalion Chief 408, Safety Officer 402, Deputy Chief 402Support Units: Light & Air 423, Public Information Officer 401🔍 Investigators: Investigator 10, Investigator 12, Investigator 14Thank you to all of our 911 tele-communicators, firefighters and paramedics for their dedication and hard work. You deserve every dime and more! Thank you!
Lived in FC for 40 years! Yes you deserve every penny and more including respect!!
It is insanity to even think about eliminating these units! Housefires don't have a pause button. Someone experiencing the symptoms of a heart attack or stroke needs immediate attention and transport to the ER. The same would apply to a severely injured person. The population in our area is growing as evidenced by new construction. This is not the time to consider cutbacks in these vital services.
